Artist's Description
A horseshoe is considered lucky for numerous reasons. Folklore claims that witches and mythical creatures were afraid of iron as it couldn't be destroyed by fire. They were hung outside the home to ward off evil spirits and to bring the household good luck.
They are nailed in place through seven holes and many cultures seven is considered to be a lucky number.
Also, I guess it is undecided as to which way it should be hung up. Some say to hang it with it's heels up "U" to keep all the good luck in so it won't escape. While others say to hang it heels down, so the good luck pours on to all who walk underneath and bring it into the home.
This horseshoe was nailed to the side of the fence surrounding the park, but whether it was put there for good luck, or just ended up there, who knows!
