Description
In the Arthurian tale The Sword and the Stone, it is said that Arthur became king by pulling a sword out of the stone which many believe to be Excalibur.
In yet another tale, The Lady of the Lake, Arthur was already king and was given the sword by the Lady of the Lake, who referred to it as Excalibur.
Then we have the 15th century Writer, Thomas Malory, who records both versions of the legend in his Le Morte d'Arthur, naming both swords as Excalibur.
Perhaps there were two swords, who really knows. Some legends suggest that the sword was owned solely by the king, where other earlier French works state that Excalibur is used by Gawain, Arthur's nephew and one of his best knights. So perhaps there were two after all!!
