Description
The first silk top hat was made in England by a hatter called George Dunnage in 1793. From 1800 - 1850 the topper became much taller and with it's straight sides it was known as the Stovepipe hat. Habitually worn by Abraham Lincoln, it gave him an unforgettable presence as he was naturally 6' 4" tall, so always stood out in a crowd.
The Top Hat has been made famous by the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland; on the I Want You for US Army poster, as the producer of white rabbits for magicians around the world and I could go on.
With a belt wrapped around it, it is the well-known trademark of Slash (Saul Hudson) the former lead guitarist for Guns n' Roses. Who in an interview with the Huffington Post, openly admitted to stealing both items, but says he would be lost without them.
Still the hat of choice for Grooms and British Royalty and a definite 'must-have' to be dressed up by Steampunk aficionados.
I uploaded this image in both colour and b/w as I couldn't decide which I prefered. Created for a specific project.
