Frankenstein was portrayed by many actors, the most memorable probably being Boris Karloff, followed by Lon Chaney back in the 1930s. However this image is based on the Frankenstein portrayed by Glenn Strange (1899 - 1973), who, for those who can remember back that far was mostly known for his roles in Westerns.
While he was on set for another film, make-up artist Jack Pierce noticed Strange's facial feature and felt he would make a great Frankenstein. The fact that he was also 6' 5" tall, made him perfect for the role. He was cast in the movie House of Frankenstein in 1944, but played the role in two more movies, becoming the iconic face that was used on games and toys.
